The castle is shown on the April calendar plate of Très Riches Heures and some of its battlements survive. The Limbourg's painting shows a herber tucked behind a wall in the middleground. The castle (built c1222) and is likely to have had a similar garden within its walls. It passed to Blanche of Castile and was owned by the Duc de Berry, a great patron of the arts, when the painting was done. A further indication of the castle garden's likely form can be gained by the June calendar plate showing the Duc's Paris garden.
