Cedar Valley Arboretum & Botanic Gardens

Cedar Valley Arboretum was started in the 1990s by members of the community to create a green space in the area. There is a rose garden, herb garden, hosta garden, prairie and labyrinth.

Head Gardener's Comment

The purpose of The Arboretum is to provide a public green space to connect people with nature through summer education programs, volunteer opportunities, and gardens to enjoy. No sensory overload - just fresh air and natural beauty.

The Arboretum sits on 72 acres just east of Hawkeye Community College, with over half of the grounds still in corn and soybeans planted by the college's agriculture department. With an emphasis on our natural world, the buidings, gardens, and artwork have a strong organic theme, tied to Iowa's agriculture roots.

History

The Arboretum was built from the ground up by volunteers and members of the Cedar Valley community. They have donated their time, talents, and money, making this green space a true cross-section and gem of our community. The first trees were planted in 1996 as part of a Sesquicentennial celebration planting as a legacy to the pioneers that came to this territory over 150 years ago.

1927 East Orange Road, Waterloo, Iowa, USA

The Arboretum is open April through October, dawn to dusk.

Admission is free to the public. Donations are always accepted.
