Babylon Ancient City

Babylon was a was a city and city-state in Mesopotamia. Its remains survive north of Al Hillah in Iraq 85 km south of Baghdad. The tell (a hill made of decayed mud-brick buildinss survives. It is between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. To garden historians, Babylon is most famous for its Hanging Gardens, though it now seems more likely they were at Nineveh.

Saddam Hussein undertook extensive reconstruction of the old city. It was a useful project in some respects but highly regrettable that it was built on the site of the old city. Future archaeological techniques and soil analysis might, which have told much about ancient Babylon, were sacrificed to boastfulness and the tourist industry.
