Ark, Bukhara

The Emir of Bukhara's fortress was damaged by Russian shells but enough survives to show that in medieval cities even the rulers did not have sufficient space to make gardens. The Ark was a densely populated citadel, as were the later Timurid-inspired forts in Delhi, Agra and Lahore. The strange bottle-shape of the walls appears to make life easy for attackers. It is a result of using mud-brick in an earthquake zone.
