Prince Wilhelm von Hessen-Kassel decided to make a spa in 1777 and did so by forming a romantic park, using money earned by mercenaries sent to help the English against the Americans. The park has a lake, a Gothic castle, a hermitage, a pyramid island and other garden structures.

Wilhelmsbad represents one of the earliest landscape parks in Germany. Its spa was frequented by society in the eighteenth century for about a decade. The original eighteenth century layout has largely remained unchanged. The promenade is flanked by the late-baroque spa buildings. Due to ongoing restoration work the flair is temporarily gone, but should soon shine in its old splendour. The parkland is sprinkled with decorative buildings and ornaments. Wilhelmsbad’s main attraction is a horsedrawn carousel (also currently undergoing restoration). While it may be a little difficult to appreciate Wilhelmsbad’s former glory in these days, better times are sure to come.
