Villa Del Balbianello is on a wooded peninsula projecting into Lake Como. It was built in 1787, on the site of a Fransiscan monastery, by Cardinal Angelo Durini. Steps lead from the landing stage into a terraced garden with a beautiful loggia. It was renovated by the American General Butler Amos and given to the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (FAI) in 1988.
Address - Via Comoedia, Lenno (CO), Lombardia, Italy, 22016
Opening times - Mid March to mid November. Daily except Monday and Wednesday. Open 10am to 6pm.

We visited there September 2008 arriving on a wet dreary day. We walked some kilometres up to it from Lenno.
On arrival we were taken by its beauty, the terraced gardens, the views. We traced the steps of the Star wars actors, recollecting the lingering scenes at the balcony overlooking the Lake. Despite the weather it was worth it, hardly a tourist in sight. I would recommend it, next time however I would arrive by ferry making a more grand entrance.

Even though the planting by itself is not really special, the overall layout, design, care for the garden, location, property is simply outstanding. Absolutely beautiful.

Walk up from Lenno to the garden ..its location is utterly sublime..just slowly wander around and take in the atmosphere and views and.... chill. The absence of extravagent plantings are more than compensated by the simple and spacious layout and amazing panoramic voew of the Lake.
