Francis Bacon was given the Twickenham Park estate in 1595 and it was bought by Lucy Harrington in 1608. The plan of the garden was drawn by Robert Smythson in 1609. Roy Strong, in his book on the Renaissance Garden in England, comments on the similarity of the Twickenham plan to plan of the surviving garden at Chastleton House and states that Lucy Harrington’s garden is surely an emblematic one based on the familiar plan of the pre-Copernican universe' (p.122).
