Reviews of Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and Arboretum

There are few gardens that are good to visit all year round, but this is definitely one of them. Spectacular throughout the seasons and especially good in the autumn, but also well worth making a special visit for in the winter, when the heather garden is at its best.
The nursery here is exceptional - also worth going out of your way for!

What a wonderful day out in these lovely gardens lost count of the numerous species walking through the pinetum and the winter garden was especially enchanting, only wish I lived nearer to be able to visit more often, worth every penny.

As a garden designer I really appreciate the way the winter garden is designed. There are some great plant combinations here and some which have inspired some of my recent work. Particularly when designing front gardens I consider the way garden will look all through the seasons the winter look is a good place to start.

Biased I'm sure, but I work as a vol (volunteer) at Hilliers, and every week the tapestry is different.

I work mainly on the centenery border, where the rabbits try to nibble along with the deer, but that doesn't deter the staff headed by Fran (head gardener) who always see the postive side and an oppertunity to grow a different species or place the plants strategically so that the animals are not so favoured.

Anyhow, its well worth a visit any time of year! any part of the garden, that is.

There is a childrens education area, a fab resturant, and in the summer there is artwork around the garden and lots lots more.....

Not that this place has any particular design style, it is one of Europe's richest collections of hardy plants and laid out in a very pleasant, dare one say, flowing manner. There is absolutely heaps to see throughout the year, so one visit just gives you a taster. This is a 10 course meal ! Even in the winter months the recently established winter garden is a delight and inspiration. If you haven't visited this place you haven't lived !
