Sandringham House Garden

The Queen's country retreat comprises a large Edwardian house (1902) and garden. It has lawns, woodland gardens, two lakes, a vast rock garden and a hedged enclosed garden designed by Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe, in 1947, for George VI. Jellicoe wrote that 'The need for garden secrecy .. is answered here decisively in the Chinese conception of a box within a box within a box'.

A visit to Sandringham’s sixty-acre gardens is a delight at any time of year. Woodland walks, lakes and streams are planted to provide year-round colour and interest; highlights include the formal North Garden, Queen Alexandra’s summerhouse beside its own cascading stream and many commemorative trees.

History

The formal planting of the Edwardian age has given way to great sweeping glades, bordered by splendid specimen trees and shrubs, to create an informal garden full of colour and interest throughout the year: woodland walks, lakes and streams, sheets of spring-flowering bulbs, avenues of rhododendrons and azaleas, beds of lavender and roses, dazzling autumn colour – there is always something to see. Other highlights include the formal North Garden, Queen Alexandra’s summerhouse perched above the lake beside its own cascading stream, sixteen species of oak and many commemorative trees.
