The Garden Landscape Guide

Pensthorpe

Pensthorpe has two gardens both designed by Chelsea Gold Medal winners as well as woodland and wildflower meadows.  The Millenium Garden, designed by Piet Oudolf has swathes of herbeaceous perennials and ornamental grasses.  The Wave Garden, designed by Julie Toll, is a lakeside garden with meandering Luzula and yew hedging.

History

The Millennium Garden was designed by Piet Oudolf, the internationally acclaimed plantsman. His revolutionary style of naturalistic planting fits so perfectly into the landscape at Pensthorpe that it is difficult to see where the garden begins and ends. Deep borders of grasses and perennials planted in bold drifts create dramatic waves of texture and colour.

Disagree with previous comment.....Just visited Pensthorpe, even in the winter the gardens are looking great. Can't wait to go back later in the year to see them in full colour.

Garden wise not really the place other than the Millenium garden designed by Piet Oudolf, which at the time of visiting August was looking absolutely "stunning"! The rest of the "garden" areas were not that interesting.

Wonderful to visit for both adults and children - the garden is lovely all year round - and there are the fantastic birds for the children - cranes, storks, flamingoes to name but a few!

What a wonderful relaxing place. Perfect to drift away and become inspired. I really liked the new hard landscaping in the Wave Garden with the promise of all the new bulbs being planted at the moment I will definatly visit again in the spring.

I have visited this garden(and surrounding nature reserve) a number of times since I heard Piet Oudolf had designed a garden there for the millenium. On a recent visit I noticed some new developments underway - really nice. Definitely worth a visit - a living growing garden!

Beautiful gardens to wander around within a nature reserve. Lots of different types of planting with inspiring selection of perennials and grasses and wildflower meadows well worth a visit
