Gardenvisit Editorial

The poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, purchased land at Weimar and began to make a small garden in 1776. He also designed garden buildings, planting and walks in the Ilm Park. His writing had a profound influence on German romanticism. His own Garden House at Weimar is a gentle, quiet poetic place, in sharp contrast to the bombast of Baroque gardens. On the other side of the river one can see Goethe's Hermitage [the barkenhaus].
