Kyu-Furukawa (Old Furukawa ) has an English-style lawn and rose garden near the house and a Japanese garden in the valley below. They are separated by a French-style parterre. The house and English-style garden were designed by Josiah Condor (1852-1920) in 1917. It was requisitioned by the British after the Second World War and used as an embassy. The Meiji-style Japanese garden was designed by Ogawa Jihei (1860-1933).  It is said to have a pond shaped like the Chinese character for heart.
