The garden was started by Arthur Bulley in 1898 and given to the university in 1948. Though a cotton broker, Bulley was a keen socialist and always gave the public access to his garden, as they still have. Ness Gardens have a good range of plants in the traditional groups: woodland garden, herbaceous borders, heather garden and rock garden.
