A garden made in a chalk pit by a banker who was also an enthusiastic gardener. Sir Frederick Stern wrote a book on Highdown Gardens and monographs on paeonies and snowflakes. Highdown specialises in chalk-loving plants.

This is a beautiful garden ... and it's free!! A charming, secluded site, with magnificent views over the surrounding countryside and sea.
Good in all seasons - magnificent collection of hellebores and snowdrops in spring; astounding peonies in summer; good autumn colour and charming in winter - you can't beat the Himalayan cherry trees for texture and colour.
Probably the best example of a chalk garden in the UK.
