Reviews of Hergest Croft Gardens

Hergest Croft has some fine late 19th century (?) trees in the area immediately near the house. The problem for any garden designer would be how to compensate for the sheer ugliness of the house, a very undistinguished Edwardian (c. 1906) edifice. Of the designed area near the house, it has to be said that the parterre formed of slate beds, a sub-Andy Goldsworthy structure in the middle, and some topiary covered with wire, is a real mistake, for two reasons. Firstly, the parterre is rather isolated at the side of the house, whereas surely some of a parterre should form an important part of the main axis; secondly, the materials jar in the context of an otherwise rather lush well-planted garden.
