I have been a regular visitor to Dunster Castle since April 2010 and am never disappointed by the imposing sight of its occupation of the landscape in which it proudly rests and the way in which the colour of its stone seems to change with the hue of the surrounding trees.
Approaching on a walk from Carhampton through the deer park, the ant hills are fascinating and excellent views can be had of the water mill nestling below the castle. The riverside walk even in winter is an excellent path by which to approach the castle grounds and the paths down both sides of the river allow many different views and glimpses of the imposing structure above.
The delicate bridges are ideal for quiet contemplation in the summer or excitement when in winters full flow. The new riverside sculptures are a great addition and I am looking forward to enjoying the dappled shade by the river when summer returns.
The climb up from the river is worth the effort pausing to spot the steam train as the whistle echoes from the shoreline in the distance and different vistas come into view as you climb right up to the keep. The display in the summer house now tells the story of the garden and whilst once more formal, I think it really compliments the imposing form of the castle and is improving on each visit. Do go and look at the reservoir and wonder how that worked and enjoy the fact that you can circle the entire castle enjoying the many different scenes that come into view on your progress. Is just so easy to imagine both the victorian splendour as well as knights and archers.
The dream garden and the puff ball dahlias that just make you want to touch them to see if they are real as the are so perfect, will be the highlight of my summer visit with a riot of colour and texture. Great idea to sell them by the bunch in the shop. Roll on summer and my next visit to see what's changed again!

(3.0/5)poor quality gardens could be so much better. Blocked view points and disapointing national collection of arbutus.
