A fine Jacobean house (1612) in Cotswold stone, overlooking a valley. The garden has features from several periods: (1) an astronomical garden, which is analysed by Roy Strong in his book on The Renaissance Garden in England (2) a lake with an island, a Chinese bridge and a pagoda, (3) a herbaceous border planted according to Gertrude Jekyll's 'JMW Turner' colour scheme (4) a croquet lawn: the rules of croquet were codified at Chastleton.

A garden desperately in need of some financing to bring it up to an excellence it deserves , historically if not aesthetically. One feels the staff are doing a great job but are sadly under-resourced.
Also, there is something delightfully English to take tea in the grave yard of the neighbouring church..dead delicious !! The raspberry sponge cake is to die for as is the honey and cardoman cake. Thankfully I'm still alive to tell you so !
