A fourteenth century castle with nineteenth century house and garden. The stone for Sir Charles Monck's neoclassical house was taken for a quarry in the grounds, which was then made into a romantic 'picturesque' gorge. There are terraces round the house which overlook a rhododendron garden.

Belsay is a fantastic experience in the true sense of the word. The hall itself is preserved in a state of nostalgic, partial decay (what could be called "siogue" in Irish except almost certainly not that spelling!).
The gardens however are enchanting, playful and brave. You are led from restful, formal English country house gardens into a gorge/quarry where the scale and architectural quality of the planting can be disorientating as well as prompting lots of "wow's".
The ruins of the older family home are too inviting not to climb over before returning through the gorge where its very easy to get lost, in fact its half the pleasure of the place.
I couldn't over estimate the beauty and other worldliness of the gorge/quarry and the effect of the contrasting styles of garden and landscape.
