Whiteways are more spiritual than substantial. They tend to be dominated by great extent and by the sky's arc. In the country, this can be because they follow a ridge or run across a great plain. In the town, it is likely to come from size: wide streets fronted by great buildings. The Philosopher's Way, in Heidelberg , is white because it comands a view over the Neckar to the old town [Fig 4.26].
