Gropius, Walter

Born - Died : 1883 - 1969

German architect, principal of the School of Arts and Crafts in Berlin, Director of Art Education in Prussia and a pioneer of the modern movement. He helped to develop the links between architecture, social needs and industrial techniques. He was a pupil of Peter Behrens and helped to found the Deutscher Werkbund. From 1919 to 1928 he was Director of the Bauhaus. Walter Gropius moved to England in 1934 and America in 1938. Walter Gropius own house, in America, reveals surprisingly little interest in the design of outdoor space and, like Peter Behrens he was not averse to random rubble walling with sloppy mortar joints.
