A pioneer of the modern movement, born near Grozny and educated in England. Serge Chermayeff designed interiors for Waring and Gillow and became an architect. His own house, Bentley Wood at Halland, is best known project, designed with Christopher Tunnard. In 1940 Serge Chermayeff emigrated to America and worked with Christopher Alexander on Community and Privacy (1963).
