Ramases ruled Egypt from 1198 to 1166 BC. He fought three wars against foreign invaders but otherwise enjoyed a relatively peaceful reign in which he built the funary temple, palace and town at Medinet Habu on the west bank of the Nile at Thebes. Ramases also added to the temple complex of Karnak on the east bank of the Nile at Thebes. He was perhaps the greatest builder among the Egyptian Pharaohs. Ramases was the son of Setnakht and the father of Ramses IV.
