Proclaimed Roman emperor after the death of Trajan. As an emperor, Hadrian travelled more widely in the course of his duties, than any of his predecessors and then retired to a very large villa at Tivoli (118AD). Though ruined, it survives as one of the best examples of an imperial palace garden. Hadrian was interested in the arts and is believed to have had a hand in the design of what remains the best example of a palace garden in one of the Roman Empire's golden periods.
