Penelope Hobhouse was born in Northern Ireland in and graduated from Cambridge with an Honours Degree Economics in 1951. She was married Professor John Malins. Hobhouse is a gardener, a writer, a historian and a garden designer. She was the head gardener Tintinhull House in Somerset. Her books include: Plants in Garden History , The Story of Gardening, The Cutting Garden: Growing and Arranging Garden Flowers, Colour in Your Garden.
