Charles Edouard Jeanneret, known as Le Corbusier, was a Swiss-French architect and painter. He had a profound influence on the modern movement in architecture and a pioneering role in the creation of the modernist garden. Corbusier hoped to give cities more space for parks and gardens by building tower blocks on pilotis, so that there would be more open space for garden and parks at ground level. He designed a sculptural roof garden on the Unite d'Habitation outside Marseilles (1945-52).
