English critic, historian and museum curator. Clark spent 2 years with Bernard Berenson. From 1946-50 he was Slade lecturer at Oxford and in 1949 he published Landscape into Art. The 1969 TV series Civilisation made him famous. He lived at Saltwood Castle and was the father of the Tory MP and diarist, Alan Clark. Saltwood Castle is open under the National Gardens Scheme.
