Locke, John

Born - Died : 1632 - 1704

English philosopher and founder, with Francis Bacon, of the English empiricism. John Locke became physician to the first Earl of Shrewsbury and went into exile in Holland in 1683 for reasons of safety. His Treatise on Government (1688) laid the basis for modern liberal democracy throughout the world. John Locke also wrote a small book on the cultivation of the vine and there is always a chance that more will be discovered about his views on gardens, gardening and garden design. His name is associated with Shotover House.
