English landscape painter. At the start of his career he admired and copied Claude. By the end of his career his fascination with painting light foreshadowed both impressionism and abstact art. He was very interested in the use of colour to portray perspective effects. Turner painted a number of landscape scenes designed by Lancelot Brown, including Petworth Park.
