Watteau, Jean Antoine

Born - Died : 1684 - 1721

French painter. Jean Antoine Watteau became friendly with the keeper of the Luxembourg in Paris. This enabled him to view the pictures and to work in the gardens. Watteau painted palace-garden landscapes, showing luxurious foreground scenes which impressed Humphry Repton as the type of scenery it was appropriate to make in the immediate surroundings of a noble dwelling.
