Henry Hoare II lived at Stourhead from 1741 to 1785. He was a banker and had been on a Grand Tour. Hoare was largely responsible for the design of the garden at Stourhead, which he inherited at the age of 36. He worked as an owner-designer but employed Henry Flitcroft to design many of the garden buildings.
