Von Knobelsdorff studied painting and worked on ideal landscapes. Frederick II of Prussia (later Friedrich der Groe, Frederick the Great) commissioned him to design the Temple garden at Neuruppin (Amalthea Garten). Later Knobelsdorff was the architect of Frederick palace at Sanssouci at Potsdam (built 1745-1747) and designed the terraces on the Wine Hill.
