One of the first German landscape designers to be influenced by romantic and picturesque ideas. He studied in England and was influenced by Lancelot Brown and William Chambers. From 1776-1804 he worked for the Elector Karl Theodor at Schwetzingen. After 1789 he became responsible for the Englischer Garten in Munich and also worked on Nymphenburg.
