Descended from the Campbell's of Cawdor Castle, Colen Campbell trained as a Scots lawyer and then as an architect. His Vitruvius Britanicus was published between 1715 and 1725. Colen Campbell favoured the Palladian style. His patrons included Lord Burlington, Henry Hoare, Robert Walpole, John Aislable and the Earl of Pembroke.
