In 1756 Emes became head gardener to Sir Nathaniel Curzon at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire. He in 1760 to set up a practice as a landscape designer in the serpentine style of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. At Eaton Hall he took over from Brown. At Chirk Castle and Erddig his work continued for 25 years.
