Cloister

Cloister derives from the Latin clostrum= lock. It desscribed the part of a monastery to which the public had no access and then became used to describe a rectangular lawn surrounded by a covered walk.<a href="/history_theory/garden_books/ml_gothein_history_garden_art_design/rome_age_augustus_caesars_gardens#cloister">Example 1: Augustus Caesars gardens</a>, <a href="/history_theory/garden_books/ml_gothein_history_garden_art_design/chapter_vi#cloister">Example 2: Middle ages</a>
