Virginia House Garden

Virginia House was completed just before the stock market crash of 1929, for Alexander and Virginia Weddell. It overlooks the James River and was built to resemble a sixteenth century English manor house. The garden was designed by landscape architect Charles Gillette (1886-1968) and is a contemporaty Arts and Crafts synthesis of Italian and English styles. Gillette was a pupil of Warren Manning. The design is comparable to the illustrations in Thomas Mawson's book on the Art and Craft of Garden Making.
