Reviews of Villa Noailles, Grasse

While I can't speak for the condition of the garden today in 2009, this was the most inspiring garden I visited during a one month tour of France and its gardens in the early 1990's. The use of water throughout the multi leveled garden and its many rooms was a revelatory experience. It is the rare garden that is seen at its peak. Gardens are about moving through the spaces, discovering views, and using all of the senses. Whatever its condition today, the bones are there along with the gravity that partners with the water from the spring that fuels the numerous imaginative water features - a transforming experience. A look over a wall does not qualify anyone to rate a garden.

I write a 4-star review because the only rating today is 2 star and I definitely find it unfair. The garden is really something with all the terraces, flower beds and fountains. It is better to go early april though to be able to see peonies blooming... True that the garden bieng private and with limited times for visit it is not perfectly taken care of, but it does not decrease its charm.

Getting access to this garden was a challenge that I didnt surmount on my visit. Peeking over the walls/fence gave glimpses of what was a lovely gsrden but was looking quite unkempt and underplanted
