The Vanderbilt Estate in Hyde Park is an early nineteenth century Picturesque estate redesigned in an Italian manner when it was bought by the Vanderbilts and a good example of a rich man's estate. The original garden was designed in the early 1800s by the Belgian garden architect Andre Parmentier, when the estate belonged to Dr. David Hosack. Frederick Vanderbilt bought the estate in 1895 and added the rose garden, pools and statuary and greenhouses. The Italian Gardens are in three parts: the annual garden, the perennial garden, and the rose garden. The cherry tree walk and the pool garden were restored in 1986. The mansion was designed by McKim, Mead and White. It has views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains.

We took the tour last year, and I must say that it was very entertaining as well as informational. The tour guide was amusing and kept your attention through the tour. Since I have seen 48 out of 50 states and have been to all of the national parks and tours there were to offer, it's saying alot. Most tours are draggy and boring but this one was great. The grounds are beautiful! So if you're looking for something to do, I suggest you spend a day here.
