York University was planned in the 1960s, by Robert Mathew Johnson Marshall, with Frank Clark as the landscape consultant. Clark recommended arranging the buildings round a lake, which gives them coherence. The lake is a balancing reservoir and an ecological resource. Heslington Hall has a restored courtyard garden.
