The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Despite being one of the most 'found' gardens in Britain, Heligan retains the cachet of having been made famous by a book and a TV series on 'The Lost Gardens of Heligan'. It was a romantic name for a place which fell into decline during and after the First World War and has progressively been reclaimed since 1991 through a large scale restoration. The restored vegetable garden is excellent; the 'Jungle', a valley of sub-tropical plants, is dramatic; the 'Lost Valley' has grandeur of scale. Heligan has other interesting features, including a rockery known as The Ravine, a grotto, a wishing well, an Italian garden and other curiousities. On a surprisingly large scale, it is a prime example of a High Victorian Mixed Style garden design. The planting of the Himalayan Woodland Valley Garden is Gardenesque.
