Sudeley Castle Garden

  3.5/5 (2 ratings)

Gardenvisit Editorial

A large late-medieval castle with an elaborate Victorian garden. The castle once belonged to Ethelred the Unready and to Queen Katherine Parr. The Queen's Garden is a nineteenth century parterre bounded by yew hedges and planted with old roses. There is also a Chapel Garden and a Tithe Barn Garden designed by Jane Fearnley Whittingstall.

Head Gardener's Comment

One of the best aspects of a garden like we have at Sudeley Castle is that you can tailor your planting, so different parts of the garden are at their best at different times of year. May is a month of frenzied growth and there is nothing more refreshing and encouraging to a gardener than to see nature working at full tilt, filling the garden with a wealth of colour and vibrancy. June heralds Rose Week, when our centrepiece Queens Garden reaches its zenith, with a symphony of colour and scent making it unmissable. As one part of the garden reaches its peak, another area is taking shape for the late summer display. After months of planning we welcome visitors to the new Tudor Physic Garden and Sir Roddy Llewellyn as Design Consultant. In summary Sudeley Castle is the very best that an English garden has to offer.

History

The Castle has changed hands over a dozen times during its history and today it is the private home of Lord and Lady Ashcombe, Henry and Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst and their families.

Plants of Note

Sudeley’s glorious gardens are amongst the very best in England, from the centrepiece Queens' Garden, billowing with hundreds of varieties of old fashioned roses, to the Tudor Physic Garden which is being introduced for the 2011 season.

As Charlotte says there are some VERY fine things here and yes the Queens Garden, Tithe Barn and Knot garden are superb.

And yet there are bits that on my visit was very shabby. In the area around the pheasantry worked had started and then stopped with scars left by tractors.

This is a really lovely garden and so much to see - the centre piece is the glorious Queen's Garden, but not to be missed are The Secret Garden (designed by the late Rosemary Verey); the wonderful Knot Garden; Victorian Garden; and Tithe Barn Garden.
Do allow a decent amount of time here to see everything - you won't be disappointed.
