St Martin de Boscherville Abbey

Gardenvisit Editorial

The Benedictine Abbey was built in the early 12th century, on a site which had long been regarded as sacred by pagans. It could well have been the site of a sacred tree, which the Christians cut down. The Rule of St Benedict encouraged gardening and the Abbey will have had a garden. A restoration plan was launched in 1987 and a decision was taken to restore the gardens according to plans and documents of archives dating from the 17th century. There is a cloister and the gardens have views over the Seine valley.

Certainly worth a quick visit if you are in the area..For me, Potager's somehow don't quite hold one's attention for very long, although in this case there is an intriguing green cloisters being grown, surrounded by a veritable sea of white roses.
Fortunately the views from the highest assessible place are quite stunning, and the Abbeye is def worth a visit.
