Gardenvisit Editorial

Asplund's Woodland Crematorium is a modern parallel to the mortuary temples of Ancient Egypt, conveying the transient grandeur of life and the peaceful solemnity of death. Visitors ascend a walled ramp and pass through the gate to view a prospect of three ceremonial hills. A stone ramp, flanked by a giant black granite cross, ascends to the crematorium, within which John Lundqvist's sculpture of The Resurrection gestures through a pillard hall to an open sky. Another hill has a great flight of steps leading to a square of trees. Asplund and Lewerentz were inspired by the sacred ways of Greece and Rome. The woodland crematorium has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Fantastic, inspirational space a vital site visit for any serious student of landscape architecture. I've only been during the spring and summer in a serious frame of mind. You cannot treat this site in a flipant manner.

If I could give this dreary place a negative rating, I would do it. It is not a garden. It is just grass + trees + graves + unhappy people (who have come to cremate their friends and relatives). Please do not come here. You will upset the other visitors grief and go home feeling depressed yourself. The only person who might enjoy a visit to Skogskyrkogarden is Mr Grim Reaper himself. Ugh!
