The Hermannshof garden was begun in the 1980s to establish new directions in German planting design, especially in naturalistic planting styles. Favoured by the mild climate of the Bergstraße region, 2500 different types and species of perennials can be admired as well as old trees some of which are rare to be seen elsewhere in Germany. Planting combinations reflect the aim of creating high aesthetic value in terms of harmony and contrast in structure and colour. Another aim of the research-led work at Hermannshof has been the establishment of permanent low maintenance plant communities.
