A Hieronymite monastery, founded in 1404. It is famous as the last retreat of the Emperor Charles V, who abdicated in favor of his son Philip II (in 1556). There is a cloister and a roofed terrace there with a fine view of the countryside. The Emperor was born in Ghent (then a Flemish city) and loved gardens. His pleasure garden survives at San Jeronimo. See comment in Marie Luise Gothein's History of Garden Art.
