Gardenvisit Editorial

Salzburg Castle has two features of interest to the garden historian:
  • gun terraces which could have been used for domestic purposes in peacetime (like the bulwarks which are the etymological, and functional, origin of the English word 'boulevard'
  • an internal courtyard providing shelter from those who had to leave on an exposed hilltop for reasons of security

The courtyard of Feste Hohensalzburg gives off a unique contemplative and amazingly relaxed athmosphere! Sit on the bench under the knobby linden tree next to an old well watching the visitors pass by talking and laughing. This is a really ancient place at the foothills of the Salzburg alps.
The panoramic view from the visitors platform on top of the castle is absolutely fantastic! Best time of the year is a very clear spring day in March or April when the warm Föhn wind is blowing and the mountains are still covered with snow!
