The Quinta Palmeira gardens are a memory of a time long past when rich English merchants used to live the grand life in the sub-tropical climate of Madeira.
Reminders of that time are all here: The croquet lawn; the butterfly pond; ornate fountains and tiled decorations.
Unfortunately, the gardens upkeep has been somewhat lacking and, today, the grounds are rather run down and in need of some TLC.
However, for the knowledgeable, there are some interesting plants to be seen here and the views over Funchal are lovely.
Look passed the obvious lack of care and you can almost imagine what a life of leisure use to mean in Madeira.
