Head Gardener's Comment

This year we are building a new garden based on the Square Garden of Henry the Poet. It will replace the flowery mead near the entrance to the gardens. The plants are medicinal, and with a leaflet, the new feature will offer an insight into the medical ideas of the time. The new garden will be open in 2009.

History

The garden is based around Nicholas Colnet, who was physician to Henry 5th, and served with him during the Agincourt campaign. It shows the plants and garden features of the early 15th century.

Plants of Note

Mandrake. The legendary plant, now made famous by the Harry Potter books. This grows in our poisons bed, which was planted in 1996.

The dragon plant that smells of rotting meat.

The wonderful scents of the roses and the lilies. These are usually at their best in June.

The plants used to dye cloth.
