Ninfeo di Egeria

The Egeria Nymph was one of the Camene. In legend the nymphs met here to talk and to make love. The grotto compares with that at the end of the Cannopus, at Hadrian's Villa. The brickwork was clad in white and green marble. Water dripped onto ferns. It is now in the Park of the Caffarella, part of an archaeological walk by the River Almone, and accessible from the Appian Way. The grotto has given its name to mineral water, now sold in plastic bottles.
