Gardenvisit Editorial

A twentieth century garden influenced by France but ill-suited to the 'mini-Versailles' label which is sometimes used to describe the garden. There is a terrace north of the house from which steps descend to a reflecting pool. Across the water there is a parterre and a colonnade leading on to a sunken garden with rococo stairways to a sunken garden and a Temple of Love. The garden's atmosphere is closer to south Germany than north France - there is an echo of Linderhof.

Nemours recently reopened after several years of extensive renovations to the gardens and the mansion. Now they can be seen only if you are a part of a tour, so if you are planning to visit the area, arrange your agenda so that you are on a tour; it would be a shame to miss this splendid mansion and its gardens, both formal and naturalistic. It is quite different from anything else in this region, which is home to many gardens that were formerly du Pont estates, as this one also was.
